For the 2016 Euro Challenge competition, which will take place in the spring of 2015, student teams will be asked to make 15-minute presentations in which they are required to:

  1. Describe the current economic situation in the euro area (the economic region consisting of the 19 EU member countries who have adopted the euro).

  2. Select one economic-related challenge confronting the euro area as a whole (see list below), and pick one of the 19 member countries of the euro area to illustrate that challenge.

  3. Recommend a policy or policies for addressing the challenge you identified in the country you selected. Be sure to include in your recommendation a discussion of how having a single currency may or may not affect the policy choices for addressing the challenge.

Teams can choose one of the following economic-related challenges:

  1. Promoting Investment and Innovation

  2. Demographics and an Aging Workforce

  3. Banking Union and Financial Stability

  4. Globalization and Migration

  5. What Role Does Fiscal Policy Play in Promoting Growth?

  6. Tackling High Unemployment

  7. Living with a Single Monetary Policy

  8. How to Overcome Slow Growth?

  • In the spring (mid-March), teams of three to five students present their findings on-site or via video presentation to a group of panelists who will judge the presentation and ask questions. Presentations are typically 15-minutes followed by a 10-minute Q&A. The World Affairs Council of Charlotte will communicate directly with individual schools once the venue, date and presentation time(s) are confirmed.

  • Our panel will decide on the winning presentation. The team that wins will represent North Carolina in New York City.

  • The best teams from each region travel to New York City to compete in the national finals at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. Conditional on an annual grant, winning teams earn monetary awards and a trip to Washington generously offered by The Moody’s Foundation. Funding and logistic support are provided through "Working in Support of International Education" once we are past the preliminary round.
